What is Spunlace Nonwoven Laminated with PE Film?

Spunlace-PE laminate is a two-layer composite fabric produced by thermally bonding a spunlace nonwoven layer to a polyethylene (PE) film layer. The spunlace layer faces the patient or user side — providing softness, absorbency, and a natural feel. The PE film layer faces outward — acting as a fluid barrier that prevents strike-through and leakage. Together they form a single composite sheet used extensively in hygiene and medical disposable products.

Unlike SMS or spunbond laminates, spunlace-PE laminate offers superior softness and drapeability on the skin contact side. The viscose or PET-viscose spunlace component gives the composite a cloth-like quality that synthetic film-backed nonwovens cannot replicate. This makes it the preferred substrate for premium underpads, disposable bed sheets, and patient hygiene products where patient comfort is a procurement priority.

Applications — Where Spunlace PE Laminate Is Used

Underpads and incontinence pads: The most common application. Spunlace-PE laminate forms the backing layer of underpads — the spunlace top gives softness against the bed surface while the PE film prevents fluid from passing through to the mattress. Available in 45–80 GSM total composite weight for standard and heavy-duty underpad specifications.

Disposable bed sheets and patient drapes: Used in hospital disposable bed sheets where a fluid-barrier layer is required under the patient. The spunlace surface provides a comfortable, cloth-like contact layer while the PE film provides leak protection below. Preferred over pure SMS constructions in premium hospital linen replacement products.

Surgical and examination table covers: Spunlace-PE laminate in 50–70 GSM used as a soft, disposable cover for examination tables and procedure chairs. The PE film backing prevents contamination of the table surface while the spunlace facing provides patient comfort.

Hygienic garments and cover-ups: Used in disposable gowns, patient wrap-arounds, and hygiene coveralls where a lightweight, fluid-resistant, and comfortable material is required.

Maternity and post-operative hygiene products: Spunlace-PE laminate in lower GSM (40–55 GSM) used in maternity underpads, post-surgical drapes, and post-operative hygiene sheets where patient skin contact comfort and fluid containment are both critical.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is spunlace nonwoven laminated with PE film used for?

A: The primary applications are underpads, disposable bed sheets, hospital drapes, examination table covers, and post-operative hygiene products. The spunlace layer provides a soft, absorbent patient-contact surface while the PE film layer provides fluid barrier protection on the outer side.

Q: What spunlace fiber options are available for the laminate?

A: We offer 100% viscose spunlace (maximum softness and absorbency) and 70/30 PET-viscose spunlace (higher tensile strength with good softness) as the nonwoven layer. The choice depends on your product performance and cost requirements. 100% viscose is preferred for premium patient hygiene applications.

Q: Is the lamination done with adhesives?

A: No. Our spunlace-PE lamination uses thermal bonding without chemical adhesives. This maintains the binder-free integrity of the spunlace layer and ensures the composite is safe for skin contact and medical use without the risk of adhesive migration.

Q: What is the difference between breathable and non-breathable PE film in the laminate?

A: Non-breathable PE film provides complete fluid barrier and is used in standard underpads and bed protection products. Breathable (microporous) PE film allows moisture vapour to escape while blocking liquid — used in premium hygiene products where skin breathability is a product feature. Both are available. Specify your requirement when requesting a quotation.

Q: What GSM is typical for underpad applications?

A: Standard underpads use a spunlace-PE laminate composite of 55–80 GSM total weight. A common specification is 40 GSM spunlace + 20 micron PE film. Heavy-duty underpads may use 50–60 GSM spunlace with 25–30 micron PE film for higher absorption capacity and barrier performance.

Q: Do you export spunlace PE laminate fabric?

A: Yes. We export to buyers in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America. Full export documentation is provided with every shipment. See our spunlace nonwoven supplier export page for details.
