What Is Biodegradable Spunlace Nonwoven Fabric?

Biodegradable spunlace nonwoven fabric is a hydroentangled nonwoven produced entirely from natural or man-made cellulosic fibres — with zero synthetic (polyester, polypropylene, or nylon) content. Because the fabric contains no petroleum-derived polymer fibres, it is capable of complete biological degradation through microbial action under industrial composting or natural soil conditions. The degradation process returns the fabric to water, carbon dioxide, and biomass without leaving persistent microplastic fragments.

For B2B manufacturers, “biodegradable” is not a label decision — it is a procurement specification. The fibre composition must exclude all synthetic polymers, the hydroentanglement process must use no chemical binders, and the biodegradability claim must be supported by third-party test data per the relevant standard (EN 13432, ISO 17088, ASTM D6400, or OK Compost Home). Without test data, a biodegradable claim on finished product packaging is a regulatory and marketing compliance risk.

Favourite Fab supplies biodegradable spunlace in 100% viscose, 100% bamboo, 100% lyocell, 100% cotton, and blends of these cellulosic fibres. All grades are produced without chemical binders. Third-party biodegradability test reports are available on request for export orders into regulated markets.

🌿
Zero Synthetic Fibre — The Only Rule That MattersA spunlace fabric is biodegradable if and only if it contains zero synthetic polymer fibres. Even 10% polyester content prevents complete biodegradation — the cellulosic fraction degrades while the polyester fraction fragments into persistent microplastics. Biodegradable spunlace must be 100% natural or man-made cellulosic fibre: viscose, bamboo, lyocell, cotton, or blends of these.
💧
No Chemical Binders — Hydroentanglement OnlySpunlace (hydroentangled) nonwoven is inherently binder-free — fibres are mechanically interlocked by water jet needling without adhesives. This is why spunlace is the preferred web-bonding method for biodegradable nonwoven: thermal bonding requires polyester binder fibres, chemical bonding uses latex adhesives, and resin bonding leaves non-biodegradable residues.
📋
Biodegradability Requires Test Data — Not Just Fibre ClaimsA manufacturer cannot claim a product is biodegradable based on fibre composition alone. Regulatory bodies and retailers require test data per EN 13432, ASTM D6400, ISO 17088, or OK Compost Home depending on the degradation condition claimed. Favourite Fab can arrange third-party testing against these standards for export orders.
♻️
Flushability Is a Separate — and Stricter — SpecificationBiodegradable and flushable are not the same specification. Flushable wipes must disintegrate in water within a defined time (INDA/EDANA FG521.3 or BS EN 14858). Most biodegradable spunlace grades are not flushable. If your product requires a flushable claim, state this explicitly — it requires a different substrate specification and additional testing.

Which Cellulosic Fibre Is Right for Biodegradable Spunlace?

All four fibre options produce a biodegradable spunlace substrate. The choice determines cost, softness, eco-positioning, and production performance.

100% ViscoseMost Cost-Effective

Wood pulp-derived cellulosic fibre. Fully biodegradable. Highest absorbency — up to 11× dry weight. Best cost-performance ratio for biodegradable spunlace. Suitable for budget-conscious eco-label wipes and hygiene products at competitive price points. The dominant choice for baby wipes, facial wipes, and cotton wipe alternatives targeting biodegradable claims.

100% BambooBest Natural Claim

Bamboo pulp-derived fibre. Fully biodegradable. Strong consumer resonance with natural and sustainable claims. Softer than standard viscose. 20–30% price premium over viscose. Preferred for premium wet wipes, feminine hygiene, and baby products where bamboo as a raw material is a key marketing differentiator on packaging.

100% Lyocell (TENCEL™)Premium Eco + Softness

Produced via closed-loop NMMO solvent process — the most environmentally credible fibre in this category. Fully biodegradable. Superior softness and moisture management. 30–50% price premium over viscose. Correct specification for products where closed-loop manufacturing is a marketable sustainability credential — EU premium cosmetic sheets, certified sustainable baby wipes, and medical nonwovens targeting eco-certification.

100% Organic CottonGOTS / Certified

Certified organic cotton — no pesticides, no GMO. Fully biodegradable. Supports GOTS, OEKO-TEX, and organic certification pathways. Highest price premium. Best suited for ultra-premium products where organic cotton certification is a specific consumer or retailer requirement.

Biodegradable Spunlace — Full Specification Range

Making a Verified Biodegradable Claim — What Procurement Teams Need to Know

The regulatory environment for biodegradability claims is tightening globally. EU Green Claims Directive, US FTC Green Guides, and ASEAN frameworks all require claims substantiated by specific test data.

EN 13432 — Industrial Composting (EU)

The reference standard for compostability claims in the EU. Requires ≥90% biodegradation within 6 months at 58°C composting conditions and ≥90% disintegration within 3 months. Products carrying the Seedling logo or “compostable” claim in EU markets require EN 13432 certification.

OK Compost HOME — Home Composting Certification

Stricter in practice — requires biodegradation at ambient temperature (25°C) rather than industrial composting (58°C). Products with OK Compost Home certification can be composted in a household compost bin. Third-party testing required — add 8–12 weeks to qualification timeline.

ASTM D6400 / ISO 17088 — US & International

The US equivalent of EN 13432. ASTM D6400 is referenced by BPI certification and most US state and municipal composting facility requirements. ISO 17088 is aligned with both EN 13432 and ASTM D6400 for international markets.

⚠ What You Cannot Claim Without Test Data

Under EU Green Claims Directive and US FTC Green Guides: you cannot use “biodegradable”, “compostable”, “eco-friendly”, or “sustainable” on product packaging without substantiating data. Claims based solely on fibre origin do not constitute a verified biodegradability claim. Favourite Fab recommends commissioning EN 13432 or ASTM D6400 testing before finalising packaging claims.

Frequently Asked Questions — Biodegradable Spunlace

Can I claim a product is biodegradable if it uses biodegradable spunlace substrate?+
Not automatically. The substrate being biodegradable is necessary but not sufficient. The entire finished product — including packaging, adhesives, and inks — must also be biodegradable, and the claim must be substantiated by test data per the relevant standard. The test data from the substrate COA supports your certification application but does not replace a product-level test.
What is the difference between biodegradable and compostable?+
Biodegradable means the material can be broken down by microorganisms. Compostable means it biodegrades within a specific timeframe and under specific conditions (typically industrial composting at 58°C) without leaving harmful residues. All compostable materials are biodegradable, but not all biodegradable materials are compostable within the regulated timeframe. For regulated markets, “compostable” is the more defensible claim because it is backed by specific standards.
Is a viscose/polyester blend biodegradable?+
No. Even a 70% viscose / 30% polyester blend is not biodegradable because the polyester fraction does not biodegrade. Under composting conditions, the viscose degrades while the polyester fragments into microplastic particles that persist indefinitely. Standard wet wipe substrate (70/30 viscose-PET) cannot support a biodegradable claim. The substrate must be 100% cellulosic fibre with zero synthetic polymer content.
Which fibre is cheapest for biodegradable spunlace?+
100% viscose is the most cost-effective biodegradable spunlace substrate — closest in cost to the standard viscose/polyester blend used in conventional wipes. Bamboo is 20–30% more expensive; lyocell 30–50% more; organic cotton carries the highest premium. The correct choice depends on your product price point and the sustainability claim you need to support.
Can biodegradable spunlace be used for wet wipes? Does it hold up when loaded with liquid?+
Yes. 100% viscose spunlace has been used as wet wipe substrate for decades — it was the original wet wipe material before polyester blends became common. Viscose retains sufficient wet tensile for standard wipe dispensing forces at 35 gsm and above when cross-lapped. Lyocell has superior wet tensile retention. The limitation is solvent resistance — biodegradable grades are suitable for water-based formulations but not for IPA or acetone-loaded wipes, which require polyester substrate.
What is the MOQ for biodegradable spunlace nonwoven fabric?+
MOQ for standard biodegradable grades (100% viscose or 100% bamboo in common GSM and width combinations) starts from 500 kg per specification. Lyocell and organic cotton grades carry higher MOQ due to higher raw material cost — confirmed at quotation. Contact us with your full specification for an accurate MOQ, pricing, and test data availability.
