What Is Molecular Sieve Pouch Nonwoven Fabric?

Molecular sieve pouch nonwoven fabric is the encapsulation substrate used to manufacture desiccant sachets and moisture control pouches containing molecular sieve (zeolite) granules. Molecular sieves are crystalline alumino-silicate materials with precisely uniform pore diameters (3Å, 4Å, 5Å, or 13X) that adsorb water molecules while excluding larger molecules. They are significantly more aggressive desiccants than silica gel, capable of reducing relative humidity to below 10% in sealed packaging.

The nonwoven fabric used to encase molecular sieve granules must meet a fundamentally different specification from standard packaging nonwoven. Molecular sieve granules are extremely abrasive and fine-dusting — the fabric must retain all granules and all dust generated by granule abrasion inside the pouch under the mechanical stresses of automated pouch filling, heat sealing, and in-package handling. Any dust escape through the fabric or at heat-sealed seams constitutes a packaging contamination failure.

At the same time, the fabric must allow rapid and unobstructed water vapour transmission — if moisture vapour cannot diffuse freely through the pouch wall, the molecular sieve cannot function as a desiccant. This dual requirement — maximum vapour permeability combined with zero particle leakage — defines the entire specification for molecular sieve pouch nonwoven fabric.

💨
Maximum Water Vapour Transmission — The Primary FunctionThe fundamental purpose of the pouch fabric is to allow unobstructed water vapour diffusion from the surrounding packaging atmosphere into the molecular sieve granules. High WVTR is achieved through an open pore structure. A substrate that is too dense or too heavy restricts moisture ingress and reduces effective desiccant performance in the finished pouch.
🔒
Zero Dust Egress — The Critical Safety RequirementMolecular sieve granules generate fine zeolite dust through inter-granule abrasion during pouch filling, transit, and handling. This dust can escape through fabric pores if the fabric is insufficiently dense. For pharmaceutical packaging, zeolite dust contamination is a GMP failure. For food packaging, it is a regulatory violation. The fabric must retain all dust under defined agitation conditions.
🌡️
Heat Seal Compatibility — The Processing RequirementMolecular sieve pouches are manufactured on high-speed form-fill-seal machines. The fabric must heat-seal reliably at the temperatures and dwell times used on standard desiccant pouch filling equipment. PP spunbond and SMS bond at 140–180°C without pinholes or delamination. Seal strength must survive package drop testing without pouch rupture.
⚗️
Chemical Inertness — No Substrate InterferenceThe pouch fabric must be chemically inert — it must not release extractables, plasticisers, or volatile organic compounds that the molecular sieve could adsorb and later release into the packaged atmosphere. This is particularly critical for pharmaceutical applications where VOC contamination from packaging material is a regulatory concern.

Which Nonwoven Fabric Is Used for Molecular Sieve Pouches?

The choice of pouch fabric depends on the desiccant particle size, the application environment, the heat sealing equipment, and whether pharmaceutical-grade documentation is required.

Molecular Sieve Pouch Nonwoven — Who Buys This Material

Favourite Fab supplies molecular sieve pouch nonwoven fabric as an upstream raw material to desiccant manufacturers, packaging converters, and OEM pouch producers in these segments.

💊 Pharmaceutical Packaging

SMS / Bicomponent

Desiccant sachets inside pharmaceutical bottles, blister packs, and multi-dose containers. Molecular sieve is specified over silica gel for aggressive moisture control (<10% RH). SMS or pharmaceutical-grade spunbond with USP Class VI and extractables data required.

🔋 Electronics & Battery Packaging

PP Spunbond

Desiccant sachets inside electronics packaging, LED component bags, and battery packaging where moisture causes corrosion and premature failure. Molecular sieve at 3Å or 4Å reduces RH below the threshold for condensation and corrosion.

🌊 Container & Shipping Desiccant

Laminated NW

Large-format desiccant bars and hanging strips for shipping container moisture control. Heavy-duty fabric (80–120 gsm laminated or SMS) for container desiccant bars — must withstand mechanical stress during installation and throughout a 30–90 day voyage.

🍫 Food & Confectionery

PP Spunbond

Desiccant sachets in food packaging for moisture-sensitive products. Food-grade PP spunbond with OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and FDA food-contact compliance documentation required.

🔧 Industrial Component Packaging

Frequently Asked Questions — Molecular Sieve Pouch Nonwoven

What is the difference between molecular sieve pouch fabric and silica gel pouch fabric?+
Molecular sieve granules are typically denser, harder, and more abrasive than silica gel beads — they generate finer dust under agitation and apply more abrasion stress to the fabric wall. Molecular sieve pouch fabric therefore requires stricter dust retention performance than equivalent silica gel pouch fabric. Additionally, molecular sieve is typically used in pharmaceutical and high-precision applications where GMP documentation (USP Class VI, extractables data) may be required. If you currently use silica gel pouch fabric, confirm that the dust retention spec meets molecular sieve requirements before converting.
What fabric type is best for pharmaceutical-grade molecular sieve pouches?+
For pharmaceutical primary packaging, SMS nonwoven is the most commonly specified fabric. The meltblown inner layer provides a tighter pore structure than pure spunbond, giving superior dust retention at equivalent GSM. For the highest-performance pharmaceutical applications, Tyvek (HDPE flash-spun nonwoven from DuPont) is the reference standard. Favourite Fab supplies SMS and PP spunbond grades; Tyvek is a DuPont-specific product that we do not manufacture.
What heat sealing temperature range is required?+
PP spunbond and PP SMS seal at 140–180°C with 1–3 second dwell time on standard FFS equipment. PE/PP bicomponent spunbond seals at a lower range (100–140°C) — useful when your FFS machine operates at lower temperatures. Always confirm your FFS machine seal bar temperature range before ordering — specifying the wrong fabric type for your machine’s operating temperature produces weak seals or fabric melt-through.
How is dust retention performance tested and reported on the COA?+
Dust retention is tested by filling a sample pouch with target molecular sieve granules, sealing it, and subjecting it to a standardised number of shaking cycles in a Helmke drum or equivalent agitation device. The external surface and collection filter are then examined for zeolite dust. Our COA reports the dust retention test result as pass/fail against a defined particle count threshold. For pharmaceutical applications, we can arrange testing against your specific granule type and acceptance criteria.
Do you supply pharmaceutical-grade molecular sieve pouch fabric with USP Class VI data?+
Yes. Pharmaceutical-grade PP spunbond and SMS grades are available with USP Class VI biocompatibility data and extractables (NVR and ion profile) test reports from third-party laboratories. State your pharmaceutical application and market at enquiry — there is additional cost and lead time for pharmaceutical-grade documentation.
What is the MOQ for molecular sieve pouch nonwoven fabric?+
MOQ for standard PP spunbond and SMS grades starts from 500 kg per specification. Pharmaceutical-grade grades with USP Class VI documentation carry higher MOQ confirmed at quotation. Custom roll widths may also carry higher MOQ. Contact us with your full specification for an accurate MOQ and pricing.
