The Basics

What Is PE/PP Bico Spunbond Nonwoven Fabric?

PE/PP bicomponent spunbond nonwoven fabric is made from two-component filaments. Each filament has a polypropylene (PP) core surrounded by a polyethylene (PE) sheath. These filaments are extruded, bonded, and wound into rolls using the spunbond process.

The critical property is the 30C difference in melting points. PP melts at ~160C and PE melts at ~130C. When heat is applied at 130-140C, only the PE sheath melts and bonds. The PP core stays solid and maintains the fabric structure without deforming or shrinking.

What is the difference between bico spunbond and regular spunbond?+

Regular spunbond uses single-component PP filaments bonded by heat calendering. Bico spunbond uses two-component filaments with a PE sheath and PP core that heat seal at lower temperatures. This makes bico spunbond the preferred choice for applications requiring clean, reliable heat sealing on standard pouch or packaging machines.

Can PE/PP bico spunbond be used for hygiene products?+

Yes. PE/PP bico spunbond is widely used as a top sheet or back sheet in sanitary pads and baby diapers. The PE sheath provides soft skin contact and bonds cleanly with hot melt adhesive used in hygiene product construction. OEKO-TEX certified material is available for direct skin contact applications.

What GSM range do you supply?+

We supply PE/PP bico spunbond from 20 GSM to 80 GSM. Most common specifications are 40-50 GSM for desiccant pouches and 15-25 GSM for hygiene product top sheets. Contact us with your application and we will recommend the right GSM.

Is the fabric OEKO-TEX certified?+

Yes. OEKO-TEX certified PE/PP bico spunbond is available on request. This is required for direct skin contact applications including hygiene products and baby products. Please specify OEKO-TEX when requesting a sample or quote.

What sealing machines is it compatible with?+

Compatible with bar seal, ultrasonic, and impulse sealing machines at 130-150C. Also compatible with hot melt adhesive bonding used in hygiene product manufacturing lines. We recommend a free sample trial on your specific machine before production ordering.
