Wet Wipes Raw Material — Spunlace Substrate, Lotion & Pouch Supplier India 2026

Wet wipes are one of the largest and most diverse nonwoven application categories — baby wipes, adult intimate wipes, makeup remover, surface cleaning, antibacterial wipes, kitchen wipes, automotive wipes. The Indian market has grown 15–20% annually for the past 5 years, driven by hygiene awareness and convenience demand. For manufacturers, the unit economics depend on three raw materials: the nonwoven substrate, the lotion (water + actives), and the pouch packaging.

This guide covers all three components with specifications, blend ratios, pricing, and supply from Favourite Fab.

Wet Wipe Construction — The Three Components

  1. Substrate (the dry wipe fabric): 50–70% of finished wipe weight
  2. Lotion (the liquid): 30–50% of finished wipe weight (typically 2.5–3.5g lotion per 1g fabric)
  3. Packaging: Lid-pouch or canister

For a 70 GSM, 20×15 cm wipe, total wipe weight is ~10g (3g fabric + 7g lotion).

Component 1 — Substrate Nonwoven

The dry fabric the lotion is loaded onto. Almost always spunlace nonwoven — produced by water jets entangling staple fibres into a soft, strong, lint-free web.

Substrate fibre options

Detailed comparison: Viscose vs cotton nonwoven fabric.

Substrate selection rules

  • Cost-driven mainstream: 70/30 viscose/polyester at 50 GSM
  • Premium baby: 70/30 viscose/cotton at 60 GSM
  • Organic positioning: 100% cotton at 60 GSM (with GOTS option)
  • Industrial / surface: 50/50 viscose/polyester at 70 GSM (better wet strength)
  • Cosmetic: 100% viscose, 45 GSM, soft hand-feel embossed

Embossing

Most premium wipes use embossed substrate — improves dry feel, scrubbing texture, and brand differentiation. Standard patterns: dot, square, diamond, leaf. Custom embossing rolls available for orders ≥5,000 kg.

Component 2 — Lotion Formulation

The lotion (also called wipe solution) is 95–98% water plus a 2–5% active ingredient blend.

Standard baby wipe lotion components

  • Water (DI / RO): 95–97%
  • Humectant: Glycerin, propylene glycol — keeps skin and wipe moist
  • Emollient: Aloe vera extract, vitamin E, chamomile
  • Preservative: Phenoxyethanol, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate (paraben-free standard now)
  • pH balancer: Citric acid (target pH 5.5)
  • Mild surfactant: Cocamidopropyl betaine (very low concentration)
  • Fragrance: Optional, hypoallergenic

Lotion cost: ₹35–55/kg formulated lotion. Loaded onto wipe at 2.5–3.5× substrate weight.

Specialty lotions

  • Antibacterial: Add benzalkonium chloride 0.1% — adds ₹15–25/kg lotion cost
  • Makeup remover: Higher emollient, micellar water actives
  • Surface cleaner: Quaternary ammonium, alcohol, surfactants
  • Disinfecting: 70% IPA or chlorhexidine — regulatory licensing required

Component 3 — Packaging

Lid-pouch (resealable)

The standard wet wipe pack. PE/PET/Aluminum laminate pouch with plastic flip-top lid. Holds 30–80 wipes typically.

  • Material: 80–120 micron multi-layer film
  • Cost: ₹3.50–7.00 per pouch (depending on size and print)

Canister (cylindrical)

Hard plastic tub with snap lid. Holds 100–200 wipes. Premium positioning.

  • Material: HDPE or PP injection-moulded body
  • Cost: ₹15–35 per canister

Single sachet

One wipe per sachet. Hotel, airline, restaurant catering format. Cost ₹0.80–1.50 per sachet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What GSM is best for wet wipes?

For baby wipes, 50 GSM is the mainstream choice — it holds enough lotion (typically 7g per wipe), feels substantial in the hand, and unit cost is reasonable. For premium wipes, 60–70 GSM. For thin economy wipes, 40 GSM with 30/70 viscose/polyester blend is the floor.

Why are most wet wipes spunlace and not spunbond?

Spunlace is softer, more absorbent, and lint-free — exactly what wet wipes need. Spunbond is too stiff and absorbs much less lotion. The cost difference is justified by performance.

How much lotion is loaded onto a wipe?

Standard ratio: 2.5–3.5× substrate weight. A 3g substrate carries 7.5–10.5g lotion. Some economy wipes load 4× ratio (lotion-heavy) to feel wetter on first touch — but this dries faster in the pouch.

Are wet wipes flushable?

Most are not. To be genuinely flushable, the substrate must be 100% cellulose (viscose or cotton), use water-dispersible bonding (no polyester), and pass IWSFG flushability standards. These “flushable” wipes use 100% viscose airlaid or specially-bonded spunlace, cost 2–3× more than standard.

Do I need BIS certification for wet wipes?

For baby wipes, BIS certification under IS 17078 is voluntary but increasingly required for retail and government tender sales. Antibacterial and disinfectant wipes require additional CDSCO licensing as drug-cosmetic combination products.

What’s the typical pouch size for retail?

India retail pouches: 30, 40, 60, 72, 80 wipes. Combo packs: 2×72, 3×72. Single sachets for hotel/restaurant. Canisters (100–200 wipes) for premium and cleaning categories.

Can I do private label / contract manufacturing?

Yes. Many Indian wipe converters offer contract manufacturing with brand owner’s design, formulation, and packaging. Favourite Fab supplies substrate to most of these contract converters and can introduce qualified partners to brand owners with minimum 50,000 packs/month commitment.
