What is fluff pulp?

Fluff pulp is a specialty grade of chemical wood pulp — almost always softwood kraft pulp — that is dried and pressed into sheet form at the pulp mill, then baled for shipment. Unlike paper-grade pulp, fluff pulp is engineered for low inter-fiber bonding, so it can be mechanically opened, or “defibrated,” in a hammermill on a converting line into individualized, fluffy cellulose fibers. Those loose fibers are then air-laid or carded into the absorbent core of a sanitary pad, diaper, or incontinence product, where they build bulk, wick fluid quickly, and hold the structure of the core together. Fluff pulp is a raw material input for core-forming lines — it is not a finished nonwoven roll, and it is typically blended with superabsorbent polymer (SAP) rather than used alone.

How is fluff pulp different from airlaid wood pulp and SAP?

These three materials are often confused because they sit in the same absorbent-core supply chain, but each does a different job. Fluff pulp is the raw, unbonded cellulose fiber that a converter defibrates in-house — it needs processing equipment before it becomes part of a core.
