What Is BFE 99 Meltblown Filter Fabric

Meltblown nonwoven is produced by extruding molten polypropylene through a high-velocity hot-air stream that attenuates the polymer into ultrafine fibers ranging from 1 to 5 microns in diameter. These fibers are collected as a random entangled web with very high surface area and tight interfiber spacing.

BFE 99 refers to a Bacterial Filtration Efficiency of 99% or higher, measured per ASTM F2101. This test challenges the fabric with a nebulized Staphylococcus aureus aerosol at a defined airflow and particle size distribution. Achieving BFE 99 requires both fine fiber structure and electrostatic charge enhancement — a process called electret treatment.
