What Is High GSM PET Nonwoven Geotextile

High GSM PET nonwoven geotextile is needle-punched polyester nonwoven fabric in the 100–600 GSM weight range — significantly heavier than lightweight nonwovens used in hygiene or packaging. The needle-punch process mechanically interlocks PET fibres under high-density needle penetration — producing a three-dimensional fibre structure with isotropic tensile properties and excellent puncture resistance from aggregate particles.

At 100–300 GSM, PET geotextile performs road base separation, preventing fine subgrade soils from contaminating granular road base under dynamic traffic loads. At 200–600 GSM, heavier grades handle railway subgrade separation, riverbank erosion control, landfill liner protection, and heavy-duty industrial drainage filtration where fine particle retention must be maintained under high hydraulic head.

PET is preferred over PP for geotextile applications because it is inherently UV-resistant (no additive degradation over time), has higher tensile modulus (stiffer — less deformation under load), and maintains performance at ground temperatures above 40°C where PP grades can creep. IS 14324 and ASTM D6707 specify PET nonwoven for premium geotextile applications in Indian infrastructure projects.

Applications

  • Road construction (NHAI and state highways): PET nonwoven geotextile specified under NHAI guidelines for National Highway base course separation. 100–200 GSM grades separate subgrade soil from granular base, preventing contamination under dynamic traffic loads. Reduces long-term road maintenance cost significantly.
  • Railway subgrade separation: 200–300 GSM heavy PET geotextile under ballast prevents fine subgrade soil migration into track ballast. Critical for maintaining track geometry and reducing maintenance frequency on high-speed rail corridors.
  • Slope erosion and geo bags: 250–300 GSM PET needle punch for geo bags — sand-filled bags used for riverbank protection, coastal erosion control, and temporary flood barriers. Also used as erosion control blanket on cut slopes and embankments.
  • Drainage filtration: 150–300 GSM PET geotextile with 0.1–0.2 mm AOS wrapped around perforated drain pipes, drainage trenches, and retaining wall drainage systems. Retains soil particles while allowing water flow.
  • Landfill liner protection: 400–600 GSM heavy-duty PET as protection layer over HDPE geomembrane in landfill caps and base liners — preventing puncture from overlying aggregate or waste.

Frequently Asked Questions

What GSM PET geotextile is required for road construction?

IS 14324 and NHAI specifications require 100–150 GSM for light-traffic road base separation, 150–200 GSM for heavy-traffic national highways, and 200–300 GSM for railway subgrade separation. Minimum tensile ≥300 N/5cm for roads, ≥600 N/5cm for railways. CBR minimum 2,500 N for roads, 4,500 N for railways. Contact us for IS 14324 test reports for your required GSM.

What width is available for geotextile PET nonwoven?

Standard widths: 2 m, 4 m, and 5.2 m. Wider rolls reduce seam count on large road and slope projects — fewer seams means faster installation and reduced overlap failure risk. Roll length is 50–200 m per roll depending on GSM and width. Custom widths available on request.

What is CBR puncture resistance in geotextile?

CBR puncture test per ASTM D6241 measures fabric resistance to puncture by aggregate particles. For road construction over sharp crushed stone: minimum 2,500–3,500 N CBR required. Our 150 GSM PET achieves ~3,000 N CBR; 300 GSM achieves ~6,500 N. Higher GSM = higher CBR — specify GSM based on aggregate particle size at your project site.

What is the difference between PET and PP geotextile?

PET geotextile has inherent UV resistance (no additive degradation), higher tensile modulus (less deformation under sustained load), and better performance at elevated ground temperatures vs PP. PP can creep under sustained load above 40°C — problematic in Indian climate. IS 14324 and NHAI specifications prefer PET for premium geotextile applications.

Can PET geotextile be used for geo bags?

Yes. 250–300 GSM PET nonwoven is the standard substrate for geo bags — sand-filled bags used for riverbank protection, coastal erosion control, and temporary flood barriers. PET UV resistance is critical for geo bags with prolonged outdoor exposure. Seam strength per ASTM D4884 available on request for geo bag fabricators.

What is the MOQ for high GSM PET geotextile from Favourite Fab?

MOQ is 1,000 kg per grade and width. For reference: 1,000 kg of 200 GSM, 4 m wide PET geotextile equals approximately 1,250 sqm. Container-load pricing for 40ft HC (5–10 MT) available. Sample rolls (5–10 m length) for site trials — dispatch within 3–5 working days.
