Our meltblown PP oil-absorbent nonwoven achieves up to 20× its own weight in oil sorbency when tested per ASTM F726 with reference mineral oil. The test involves immersing a weighed sample in oil, allowing complete saturation, draining for 60 seconds, and re-weighing to calculate sorbed oil. This 20× figure means 1 kg of our fabric can absorb and retain up to 20 litres of mineral oil — one of the highest sorbency values achievable in nonwoven materials due to meltblown’s sub-micron fibre capillary structure.
Does oil-absorbent nonwoven also absorb water?
No — intentionally. Our meltblown PP oil-absorbent fabric is treated with a hydrophobic surface finish that causes water to bead and run off while allowing oil to be absorbed by capillary action. This oil-selectivity is critical for spill response on open water surfaces (oil booms) and in stormwater containment systems, where the sorbent must pick up floating hydrocarbons without becoming saturated with water and sinking. Oil-only sorbency is a key quality parameter tested under ASTM F726.
