What Is Oil Spill Sorbent Meltblown Nonwoven Fabric Booms
Oil spill sorbent nonwoven fabric is hydrophobic meltblown polypropylene that selectively absorbs oils, fuels, and hydrocarbons while repelling water. Used in pads, rolls, and boom formats by port authorities, refineries, shipping fleets, and industrial plants for marine and dock spill response under MARPOL Annex I and Indian Oil Spill Disaster Contingency Plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What grade of oil does the sorbent pick up?
A: Universal grade absorbs all hydrocarbons — crude oil, diesel, petrol, lubricants, vegetable oil. Oil-only grade rejects water entirely. Maintenance grade absorbs water-based coolants too.
Q: Are the booms ISO 6610 / MARPOL compliant?
A: Yes. Booms tested per ASTM F726 (sorbency) and IMO MARPOL Annex I sorbent requirements. Test certificates supplied with every consignment.
Q: How is saturated boom disposed?
A: Saturated polypropylene booms are incinerated for energy recovery (~10,000 BTU/lb) per hazardous waste protocol. We can connect to qualified disposal contractors in India.
Q: Can you supply spill response kits?
A: Yes. Custom kit configurations — pads + booms + pillows + skirts in HDPE drums or plastic carry-cases. Branded kits for port authority, refinery, and shipping clients.
Q: Minimum order quantity?
A: MOQ is 500 kg fabric or 50 booms. Sample 5 kg fabric or 1 boom provided for absorbency and buoyancy validation.
Q: Do you supply OSRO and CGI-approved products?
A: Yes. Approved by Indian Coast Guard (OSRO Tier 1+2) and major Oil Spill Response Organisations. Compliance documents available.

B2B Applications & OEM Use-Cases
- Oil Spill Response Equipment Manufacturers: Companies manufacturing oil boom systems, sorbent pads, and emergency spill kits for offshore platforms, refineries, and port facilities source our ASTM F726-tested meltblown PP for its high oil-only sorbency (up to 20× own weight) and hydrophobic surface that rejects water, maximising oil uptake capacity per kilogram of sorbent deployed.
- Industrial Maintenance and EHS Suppliers: Industrial distributors and environmental health & safety (EHS) product companies pack our meltblown PP roll material into branded sorbent pads, pillows, and socks for sale to manufacturing plants, vehicle workshops, and chemical storage facilities for routine maintenance spill containment.
- Wastewater Pre-Treatment Plant Operators: Operators of oil-water separators and industrial effluent pre-treatment systems use our meltblown PP as a coalescing and polishing sorbent layer in filter housings, capturing residual oil and grease from wastewater streams before discharge to the main treatment plant or CETP.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does ASTM F726 measure for oil sorbent nonwoven fabric?
ASTM F726 is the standard test method for sorbent performance of absorbent materials used for oil spill control. It measures the oil sorbency capacity (grams of oil sorbed per gram of sorbent) and retention (oil retained after draining) under controlled conditions using a reference mineral oil. A result of 20× own weight means 1 kg of fabric absorbs up to 20 litres of oil. ASTM F726 also tests water pick-up (should be minimal for oil-only sorbents) and reusability.
Why is meltblown PP used for oil sorbents instead of woven or spunbond fabric?
Meltblown PP has a sub-micron fibre structure with an extremely high surface area-to-weight ratio — this is what gives it sorbency 10–20× its own weight. The fine fibre matrix creates thousands of capillary channels that wick and retain oil by capillary action. Spunbond PP has much coarser fibres and lower surface area, giving sorbency of only 3–5× own weight. Woven fabrics have even lower sorbency. For oil spill response, meltblown PP is the industry-standard choice precisely because of its unique fibre structure.
Can meltblown PP sorbent fabric be incinerated or recycled after oil absorption?
Yes. Spent meltblown PP oil sorbent is classified as oily industrial waste and is most commonly disposed of by incineration at licensed industrial waste incineration facilities, recovering energy from both the oil and the PP fibre. In some applications, the oil-laden sorbent is mechanically wrung out, recovering up to 70% of the sorbed oil, and the sorbent is reused for 3–5 cycles before disposal. Clean meltblown PP trim and off-cuts are 100% recyclable as PP feedstock.
