Surgical Gown Raw Material — SMS, SMMS Nonwoven Supplier India 2026

Surgical gowns are critical PPE in operating theatres, emergency rooms, and infectious disease wards. The right raw material protects the wearer from blood, body fluids, and pathogens — while remaining comfortable for hours of surgical use. The dominant raw material is SMS (Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond) or SMMS (Spunbond-Meltblown-Meltblown-Spunbond) nonwoven fabric, with the meltblown layer providing the barrier function.

This guide covers SMS and SMMS specifications, AAMI gown levels, BIS standards, GSM by application, and supply from Favourite Fab in India.

What Is SMS / SMMS Nonwoven?

SMS is a tri-layer composite nonwoven:

  • S (Spunbond, top): Continuous-filament PP — strong, abrasion-resistant outer surface
  • M (Meltblown, middle): Microfibre PP — barrier filter for liquids and pathogens
  • S (Spunbond, bottom): Continuous-filament PP — soft inner layer for skin contact

SMMS adds a second meltblown layer for higher barrier performance. The meltblown sandwich is what makes SMS/SMMS the standard for surgical and isolation gowns globally.

AAMI Gown Levels & Required Materials

AAMI PB70 is the global standard for surgical gown barrier protection. Indian BIS standard IS 17334 follows similar levels.

AAMI LevelUse CaseLiquid BarrierRecommended Material

Level 2Drawing blood, IV insertionLight fluidSMS 40–45 GSM
Level 3Arterial blood draw, IRModerate fluid pressureSMMS 45–50 GSM or SMS + film
Level 4Long surgery, infectious diseaseHeavy fluid + virus barrierSMMS 50–60 GSM laminated, or PE-laminated

Hydrostatic head measures fluid penetration resistance under pressure — the higher the value, the better the barrier.

Surgical Gown Construction

A standard reinforced surgical gown uses different materials in different zones:

  • Sleeves and front (critical zone): SMMS 50 GSM + PE film laminate (Level 4)
  • Back panel: SMS 35–40 GSM (lower-cost, breathable)
  • Cuffs: Knitted polyester ribbing
  • Ties / closures: Spunbond strips + hook-and-loop or ties

This zoned construction balances protection where it’s needed with breathability and cost where it’s not.

BIS & Regulatory Compliance

  • IS 17334: Indian standard for medical face mask and gown raw material — referenced in PPE specifications
  • EN 13795: European standard for surgical gowns
  • AAMI PB70: US standard, dominant globally
  • CE Mark Class I or IIa: Required for export to EU
  • FDA 510(k): Required for US market sales

Indian government tender supplies typically specify IS 17334 compliance with documented test reports.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between SMS and SMMS?

SMS has one meltblown layer between two spunbond layers (3 layers total). SMMS has two meltblown layers (4 layers total), giving stronger barrier performance against fluids and pathogens. SMMS costs ~25–40% more than equivalent-GSM SMS.

Is SMS waterproof?

SMS is water-resistant, not waterproof. The meltblown layer slows fluid penetration but does not stop it under sustained pressure. For genuine waterproof performance (Level 4 critical zone), SMMS is laminated with PE film.

Can I reuse a surgical gown?

Disposable gowns are single-use. Reusable surgical gowns use woven polyester-cotton fabric and are laundered/sterilised. Each construction has its place — reusable lowers per-use cost, disposable lowers cross-contamination risk.

What’s the typical sterilisation method?

Ethylene Oxide (ETO) sterilisation is the standard for SMS/SMMS gowns. Gamma irradiation also works but requires specific stabiliser additives in the meltblown to prevent degradation.

What HSN code applies to surgical gowns?

Finished surgical gowns: HSN 6210 (made-up textile articles) or 9018 (medical instruments) depending on packaging and registration. SMS/SMMS raw material: HSN 5603, GST 12%.

Are isolation gowns the same as surgical gowns?

No. Isolation gowns are AAMI Level 1–2 — protect against splash and contact. Surgical gowns are Level 3–4 — fluid-resistant or fluid-impermeable, sterile-packed, with reinforced critical zones. Different materials, different prices, different regulatory paths.
