What is Needle Punch Nonwoven Fabric?
Needle punch nonwoven (also called needlefelt or needled fabric) is a mechanically bonded staple-fibre nonwoven in which a loose fibre web is consolidated by repeatedly piercing it with thousands of barbed needles mounted on a reciprocating needle board. Each needle stroke drags fibres vertically through the web, creating dense fibre entanglement and three-dimensional interlocking. No heat, water, chemicals, or binders are required — bonding is purely mechanical. This makes needle punch nonwoven uniquely suitable for thick, heavy fabrics (100–1500 GSM and beyond) requiring high tensile strength, tear resistance, and dimensional stability. Standard fibre options include polyester (PET), polypropylene (PP), viscose, polyester/viscose blends, recycled fibres, and aramid for high-temperature variants. Optional finishing includes thermal calendering, glazing, singeing, lamination, PTFE coating, and chemical impregnation.
How Needle Punch Nonwoven is Manufactured
Needle punch manufacturing begins with bales of staple fibre opened, cleaned, and blended in a multi-bin opener. The opened fibre is fed to a carding machine that aligns fibres into a thin web. Multiple card webs are cross-lapped on a moving belt to build up a multi-layer batt at target GSM, providing isotropic strength in machine and cross directions. The batt is then drafted (controlled pre-stretching) for uniformity.
The drafted batt enters the needle loom, where one or more needle boards holding 4000–10000 barbed needles per metre reciprocate vertically at 800–2000 strokes per minute. Each stroke drives needles through the batt; barbs catch fibres on the down-stroke and drag them through the web, creating vertical fibre columns that mechanically interlock the layers. Successive needling stations with progressively finer needle gauges and specific punch densities (typically 100–600 punches/cm²) consolidate the web to its target density and strength. After needling, the fabric may be calendered (heat + pressure for surface smoothness), glazed (one-sided heat treatment), thermo-bonded (surface heat-set), laminated (with film or other webs), or chemically impregnated. The web is wound onto rolls and slit to customer specification. Each batch is QC-tested for GSM, thickness, MD/CD tensile, CBR puncture, permeability, and dimensional stability before release.
