Hydrophilic Top Sheet for Diapers and Hygiene Products
Hydrophilic top sheet for diapers and hygiene products is the wettable spunbond or hot-air-through nonwoven layer that contacts skin and channels fluid into the absorbent core. Favourite Fab manufactures hydrophilic topsheet in 13–25 GSM with strike-through times under 3 seconds and rewet below 0.2 g — engineered for baby diapers, adult incontinence briefs, sanitary napkins, panty liners, and underpads.
This page is the application-side reference for hygiene OEMs and converters. It explains topsheet selection logic — when to spec SS vs SSS, when to upgrade to apertured or hot-air-through, how GSM choice changes line speed and end-product feel, and what test specs to lock in your PO. For the manufacturing-side technical pillar, see Hydrophilic Non Woven Fabric Manufacturer India.
Why the Topsheet Matters
The topsheet is the first nonwoven layer the wearer feels. In a baby diaper, it is the layer that touches the baby’s skin. In a sanitary pad, it contacts the user during the entire wear cycle. The topsheet has to do four things at once:
- Pass fluid through fast — strike-through under 3 seconds keeps fluid off the skin.
- Stay dry afterwards — low rewet (< 0.2 g) prevents the fluid coming back to the surface.
- Feel soft and clothlike — hand-feel drives premium positioning.
- Run cleanly on the converter line — consistent GSM, low fly, stable tensile, predictable elongation.
Hydrophobic PP nonwoven can’t do (1) — fluid sits on the surface. So hygiene topsheet is engineered hydrophilic, either via online surfactant treatment or durable hydrophilic master-batch. The chemistry decides the wear-time performance.
Hydrophilic Topsheet Grades — When to Use Which
1. SS Hydrophilic (Spunbond / Spunbond) — Mass-Market Diaper
Two spunbond beams, both treated. GSM 13–18. Economy and mid-tier baby diaper, basic adult incontinence, generic sanitary napkins. Best cost-per-square-meter; acceptable hand-feel; reliable strike-through. Most India OEM brands start here.

2. SSS Hydrophilic — Premium Diaper, Export Tier-1
Three spunbond beams. Lower defect rate, more uniform basis weight, softer hand at the same GSM. Required by Tier-1 export contracts (Europe, Middle East, North America) and premium baby diaper brands. GSM 13–25.

3. Apertured Hydrophilic — Premium Feminine Hygiene
SS or SSS topsheet mechanically perforated with patterned holes. The apertures cut strike-through to under 1 second and create the dry-feel signature of premium pads. Used in long-day pads, overnight pads, and feminine-care brands competing with Always / Whisper / Sofy. GSM 18–25.

4. Hot-Air-Through (HATB / TAB) Hydrophilic — Premium Baby Diaper
Bonded by hot-air through a perforated drum rather than calendered. Loftier, softer, bulkier at the same GSM than calendered SS. Used in premium baby diaper topsheet and as an acquisition distribution layer (ADL) beneath the topsheet. GSM 18–25 topsheet, 40–80 GSM ADL.

5. Spunlace Hydrophilic — Soft-Touch Pads, Cosmetic Liners
Hydroentangled web, often with viscose blend (50–80% viscose). Naturally hydrophilic via the viscose fraction, no surfactant needed. Premium soft hand. Used in cosmetic pads, panty liners targeting feel-first segments, and in soft-feel facial cleansing pads.

Hydrophilic vs Hydrophobic in the Hygiene Stack
A diaper or sanitary pad uses BOTH hydrophilic and hydrophobic nonwoven — in different layers:
- Topsheet (skin-side): hydrophilic — fluid must penetrate fast.
- Acquisition / Distribution Layer (ADL): hydrophilic, lofty — receives the strike and routes fluid to the SAP core.
- Absorbent core: SAP + fluff pulp — not nonwoven, but the destination of the routed fluid.
- Backsheet: hydrophobic spunbond or PE film — must NOT let fluid leak out.
- Leg cuff / standing gather: hydrophobic spunbond — repels lateral leakage.

How the Topsheet Affects Converter Line Speed
Procurement teams focus on raw-material cost per kg. Plant managers focus on line speed per minute. The topsheet sits at the intersection. Bad topsheet = stoppages, splices, fluff, off-spec product. Good topsheet = a line running at 600–900 pads or 400–600 diapers per minute with zero unscheduled stops.
What the topsheet must deliver to keep the line running:
- Tensile MD stability — 30 N/5cm minimum at 15 GSM; lower and the unwinder will snap under tension at high speed.
- Width tolerance — ± 1 mm; wider variation misaligns at the cutters.
- Splice-free rolls — at least 5,000 m parent-roll length, ideally 8,000 m. Each splice = one stop.
- Low fly and lint — fly contaminates SAP and adhesives.
- Stable hydrophilic decay — strike-through should not drift between front and back of the roll.
Sustainable Hydrophilic Topsheet Options
EU SUPD, India EPR, and Brand-Owner ESG mandates push converters to lower-plastic options:
- PP-PLA biodegradable spunbond topsheet — 30–70% PLA blended with PP. Composts in industrial composting facilities. Surfactant-treated, skin-contact safe.
- Viscose-blend spunlace topsheet — 50–80% viscose. Higher viscose fraction = more biodegradable, softer hand, inherent hydrophilicity.
- Recycled PP (rPP) spunbond — 30–50% rPP content, traceable supply chain, supports EPR claims.
- Bamboo-blend nonwoven — bamboo viscose for ESG-marketing brands.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is hydrophilic top sheet in a diaper?
The wettable spunbond or hot-air-through nonwoven layer that contacts the baby’s skin. It pulls urine through to the absorbent core within 1–3 seconds and stays dry after, preventing skin contact with fluid.
Which GSM topsheet for baby diapers?
13–15 GSM SS for economy diapers; 15–18 GSM for mid-tier; 18–22 GSM HATB or SSS for premium. Lower GSM saves cost but reduces uniformity; higher GSM gives softer hand and lower rewet.
Apertured vs non-apertured topsheet — which is better?
Apertured wins on strike-through (sub-1 s) and dry-feel — used in premium feminine napkins. Non-apertured is cheaper and adequate for baby diapers where the ADL layer handles fluid distribution.
What strike-through time is acceptable for sanitary pad topsheet?
< 3 s for daily pads, < 1.5 s for overnight or premium pads. Test per EDANA WSP 70.3. Also test strike-through after 90-day storage at 35 °C — should remain within 1 s of fresh value.
Does Favourite Fab supply OEKO-TEX certified topsheet?
Yes. All hygiene-grade hydrophilic topsheet is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I (suitable for skin contact, including baby products). COA with each lot.
What is the MOQ for hydrophilic topsheet?
1 MT trial PO, 5 MT regular PO for standard SS/SSS grades. Custom GSM, custom width, or branded master-batch SKUs typically 3 MT.
Can topsheet be supplied in custom widths?
Yes. Slit widths from 40 mm (diaper topsheet) to 3,200 mm (parent rolls). Standard tolerances ± 1 mm.
Hot-air-through vs calendered hydrophilic topsheet?
Hot-air-through is loftier, softer, and bulkier at the same GSM. Calendered is denser, stronger, cheaper per kg. Premium baby diaper uses HATB topsheet for soft skin-feel; mass-market uses calendered SS for cost.
